Peripherals devices which attached to a computer system, but which are not considered to be part part of that system. The primary functionality of a peripheral device usually is dependent upon the host computer to which it is attached. Thus a peripheral expands that system's capabilities, but it is not considered part of the system's core architecture.
Most peripherals need a special piece of software or driver to connect to (and be recognized by) a host computer. This software may be built into the host computer's operating system, or it may need to be loaded separately when the peripheral is attached.
